Isolated hills where few programmes reach.

PALM2 works only in very isolated, geographically remote areas. We build trust through village leaders, individual home visits and semi-structured interviews.

Gudalur, the Nilgiris

The Nilgiris — the "Blue Mountains" — form one of the highest ranges of South India, rising from the plains of Tamil Nadu to the east, Karnataka to the north and Kerala to the west. Gudalur lies close to the borders of all three states.

Tea, coffee and spices grow on large plantations owned by multinational companies. Small and marginal farmers grow vegetables, bananas, spices and tapioca in villages around the plantations, while tribal families live in small, isolated hamlets.

Thalavadi, Erode district

Bordering Karnataka, Thalavadi is isolated hill country with many wild animals, mostly elephants. It is less humid, with healthy soils for cultivation. Tribal villages are scattered among farming communities, and remote villages are hard to reach by public transport.

Caste divisions still shape daily life: poor, low-caste families live on one side of the village and may not use the same water source as higher castes.
